Start off exploring the heart of Coimbra with this compelling in-app audio tour!
Our journey begins in Baixa, the old town. Сenturies ago, it used to be the place where 'simple people' lived, as well as merchants and artisans. You'll proceed to Largo da Portagem, the main square of Coimbra, and then marvel at the actual Medieval House – an excellent and rare example of a private house from the 15th century.
Travel deeper in time and visit the oldest religious sites in town, where now rises the modest Church of St. Bartholomew and the imposing Romanesque Church of Santiago. Passing by the Monastery of Santa Cruz, you will listen to the story of the kingdom of Portugal and its first kings who found their eternal rest there. If you need to take a break, the tour will give you a hint about a unique café located inside a former church.
Your next destination is Alta – a space initially occupied by clergymen and nobles and later by students. It's dominated by the medieval Almedina Tower that once was a part of the mighty Castle of Coimbra and now houses a museum. Besides, you'll meet Tricana here, the local folkloric character.
The rest of the tour is dedicated to peaceful green gardens that belong to the University of Coimbra. You will also find the location of some of Coimbra's best museums and decide which one you would like to visit.
