Description

Visit the Museo di San Marco and discover its frescoes and works by Beato Angelico.

Declared a museum of national importance in 1869, the Museo di San Marco in Florence is an architectural masterpiece designed by Michelozzo and desired by Cosimo dei Medici. It was the residence of Savonarola, who made it his headquarters, and today it houses the world's largest collection of works by Beato Angelico, who also lived for some years in the monastery.

The Museo di San Marco hosts some of the most interesting collections and works in Florence, including part of the collection transferred from the Museum of Ancient Florence after its demolition in the 19th century.

The San Marco Museum is the oldest part of a former Dominican monastery and houses the world's largest collection of works by Fra Angelico (Blessed Angelico), who lived here for several years.

The convent of San Marco is a masterpiece built by Michelozzo on orders from Cosimo de' Medici and was the residence of Fra Girolamo Savonarola, who made it his headquarters. It was declared a museum of national importance in 1869. The beautiful spaces that today house the museum are located next to the Church of San Marco and the rooms adjacent to the cloister, still used as a monastery.

What do we find there? The San Marco Museum is home to some of the most interesting collections and works in the city of Florence, including collections transferred from the Museum of Ancient Florence after its demolition in the 19th century. The visit to San Marco includes the beautiful cells, the Cloister of Saint Anthony, the Refectory, the Chapter Hall and the Hall of the Last Supper.

The main masterpieces of the San Marco Museum are the works of Fra Angelico:

The famous Annunciation, a masterpiece of Renaissance painting.
The Deposition of Christ.
The Triptych of Saint Peter Martyr.
The Annalena Altarpiece.
The Last Judgment (1431).
The Altarpiece of San Marco.
The Madonna and Child.
The Tabernacle of the Linaioli.
Furthermore, the museum presents precious manuscripts in its fabulous Library (1437-1444), which belonged to the Medici family and personalities such as Pico Della Mirandola and Agnolo Poliziano.

The Museo di San Marco also exhibits a large number of other works of art of inestimable historical and artistic value, such as The Last Supper (Last Scene) by Ghirlandaio, The Madonna della Cintola by Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio, The Madonna with Child by Paolo Uccello , the famous portrait of Girolamo Savonarola, and several enamelled terracottas from the Della Robbia school.

The church of San Marco, adjacent to the museum, is also very charming. Centuries ago there was a famous bell attributed to Verrocchio, called by the Florentines la Piagnona (the weeping one).

The bell's story is intertwined with that of Fra Savonarola: he was accused of ringing an alarm during the friar's arrest, so he was punished with exile to the church of San Salvatore al Monte, where he never rang again! In 2000, it was returned to the San Marco monastery, adding another layer to the rich history of this fascinating museum.
