Description

The Neotropical region is considered the area with the largest number of bird species in the world. It is estimated that, in this region, 3,300 species are found, around 34% of the birds on the planet. The State of Roraima is the northernmost portion of Brazil, occupying a total area of 225,116.10 km². The state can be divided into three large plant formations (forests, savannas and campinaranas), in which 834 species of birds can be found, which represent 57% of all birds found in the Amazon. The number of species recorded by biogeographic units in the State is: Tepuis (389 species), lower Rio Branco forests (578 species) and savannah region (298 species). In addition, only in Boa Vista, it is easy to observe around 40 species that exist exclusively in the region, such as: teu-da-savannah (Burhinus bistriatus), celouro pear (Sturnela magna), uru-do-campo ( Colinus cristatus), rio-branco weeping (Carcomarcra cercomarcra), gray-bearded joão (Synallaxis kollari), among others. The Serras region has a very interesting diversity of birds and as a characteristic many of these are endemic to the region, we are talking here about birds that live at altitudes above 900mts, within this environment we consider the Amajari region, more specifically the Tepequém mountains, Pacaraima which borders Venezuela and where the transition between the Amazon forest and low savannas with the Venezuelan Gran Savana.
