Description

More than a cemetery, Pere Lachaise is an open-air museum that is home to the famous (and not so famous) inhabitants of Paris past & present. Discover the beautiful gardens and remarkable funerary monuments of this scenic burial ground.

Far from morbid, this peaceful garden is a place where Parisians come to reflect, to contemplate on life and its bitter-sweet end.

Visit the tombs of celebrities who died in Paris... Famous writers are buried here : Molière, La Fontaine, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, Colette, Balzac, Marcel Proust. Musicians include Frederic Chopin, Edith Piaf, Rossini, Bellini, Bizet, Yves Montand and Maria Callas, not to mention Jim Morrison. Famous artists include Modigliani, Delacroix, Géricault, Max Ernst, Gustave Doré, René Lalique, Camille Pissarro and Georges Seurat.

Beyond the celebrities, Père Lachaise holds 70,000 grave sites with over 1 million remains. Most of the "residents" are unknown, but many chose to be buried with tombs marked by beautiful statues of weeping relatives, angels escorting the departed to heaven, some even had sculptures of their pets placed on their graves.

Take the time to explore this unusual cemetery, the most visited in the world.
